EAST TEXAS CHAPTER 4

July 16, 2009: Our Chapter held a meeting at Spring Creek Barbeque restaurant in Tyler. We had 13 in attendance. We did not have a speaker at this meeting. General discussions included: CEU requirements and auditing, sufficient monumentation, requirements regarding signed and sealed documents, surveyors as excavators and ethics issues. Officer and Director nominations were taken at this meeting, as well.
 

Our next meeting is scheduled for September 2009. We hope to have a joint meeting with the members of Chapter 23.

CHAPTER MEETINGS & PROGRAMS

June Chapter Meeting held 6/9

 ---Garland City Surveyor Glenn Breysacher, RPLS, and Wayne Terry, RPLS, LSLS presented an outstanding program about an apparent vacancy they discovered while each was working on separate projects.  Lots of interaction, and many professional lessons learned, both technical and ethical.  45 attendees.

July Chapter Meeting held 7/14

---Davey Edwards, RPLS, LSLS was the Program Speaker and presented an informative program on the available online resources at the Texas General Land Office.  Recently certified  SIT's and RPLS's were invited to the meeting, introduced and recognized.  SurPac donations of $140 were collected and forwarded to Anne Glasgow.  Charlie Redd, RPLS, by member vote, was nominated and approved to fulfill the remaining 14 month term of 2 year Director Scott Posey, RPLS, who requested to resign due to work commitments.  60 attendees.

CHAPTER ELECTIONS

---The Ballot is prepared and ready for distribution to membership.  Results and Installation of new Chapter Officers will be held at the joint meeting with Chapter 2 on September 21 in Grapevine.  Incoming TSPS President Alan McLain is scheduled to attend to install Officers for both Chapters.
 

PUBLIC RELATIONS

--- Chapter 5, in conjunction with Chapter 2, has agreed to support North Lake College in efforts to host the 2010 Teachers Retreat.  A formal application and presentation will be forthcoming at the TSPS Board of Directors meeting in August.

 

---Several Chapter 5 members have agreed to volunteer for events in conjunction with the annual meeting of The Texas Map Society in Arlington on October 2nd.  Besides the personal interaction with a group that shares an interest in maps, metroplex Surveyors will participate in demonstration field exercises with transit and chain.  The volunteer efforts are being coordinated by Chapter 23 member Dan Hampton, and personnel from the Texas General Land Office, including Director of Surveys Bill O'Hara, will also be present.  All in all, a great PR opportunity!
 

EDUCATION

---Chapter 5 continues its support and promotion of the local RPLS and SIT study groups.  Led by Rene Salinas, RPLS,  the group will reconvene in late August to prepare for the October examination.  Participants widely praise the sessions.  As always, information about the groups can be found on the following two Yahoo groups:

---Several college credit survey courses are being offered for the Fall 2009 semester at North Lake College of the Dallas County Community College District.  Instructors for the courses include Chapter 5 members Colin Henry, John Pierce, and Chris Freeman, as well as Chapter 2 member Bill Coleman.

---John Pierce continues to offer lead the Certified Survey Technician efforts for Chapter 5.  The next exam opportunity is scheduled for Saturday September 12.

---Chapter 5 ExCom approved the idea of the Chapter providing the textbook and a calculator to students enrolled in the North Lake College survey courses who are employed by members of either TSPS Chapter 2 or Chapter 5.  Additionally, scholarship applications for the courses will be available to Chapter members.
 


CENTRAL EAST TEXAS CHAPTER 8

Our first meeting of the quarter was on May 7, 2009 held at Ralph & Kacoo's in Lufkin, Texas. We discussed increased CEUs, TxDOT bidding process GIS disclaimer, local subdivision ordinances, award nominations, and auction items for board meeting/BBQ fund raiser.
 

Our second meeting of the quarter was on June 4, 2009 was held at Ralph & Kacoo's in Lufkin, Texas. We discussed local subdivision ordinances, award nominations, auction items overview of pending legislation in Austin.
 

Our third meeting of the quarter was on July 2, 2009 was held at Ralph & Kacoo's in Lufkin, Texas. We discussed the proposed events at board meeting, total monies from auction items, fines for set iron pins too deep, CEU hours and the idea of an audit system of CEU’s.
 

Our next meeting is scheduled for August 6, 2008 at Ralph & Kacoo's in Lufkin, Texas.,

PERMIAN BASIN CHAPTER 10

·On June 9, 2009 we had our monthly meeting at Abuelo's in Midland at 7:00 P.M.  We had 17 members in attendance.  Our guest speaker was John Wallis with TXDOT. Mr. Wallis discussed what is new with TXDOT and what we could expect when using their website. Dr. Alred with Odessa College gave the members and update on the surveying and mapping program, and had questions about possible internships and if the classes would be suited for those preparing for the S.I.T. exam. The chapter had a raffle to send one its members to the "White Mountain Shootout" golf tournament and seminar in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Grady McGowan won and attended the seminar.
 

· On June 23, 2009, the surveying and mapping program at Odessa College was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
 

· On July 9, 2009, the educational committee met at the office of West Company of Midland, Inc. to discuss the details of the three classes that will be taught in the fall of 2009.
 

· On July 16, 2009, we had our monthly chapter meeting at The Barn Door restaurant in Odessa, Texas. We had 18 members in attendance. At the meeting we awarded Irene Jacquin an intern from France, an honorary chapter member award. The chapter announced the approval of the surveying and mapping program at Odessa College. The chapter voted to approve funds for donating books to the Legal Principles class this upcoming semester at a cost of $85.00 per book for 15 books and a total of $1285.00. The motion was passed.
 

· On July 24-25, 2009, many members of the chapter attended the “White Mountain Shootout” golf tournament and seminar in Ruidoso, New Mexico held with the Llano Estacado chapter of the N.M.P.S. There were approximately 57 attendees at the seminar, which was titled "CSI" (Corner Site Investigation), presented by John "Steve" Parrish, PLS of Reno, Nevada.

COASTAL BEND CHAPTER 12

Quarterly Report – 3rd Quarter 2009

Attendance has been light this quarter, with mainly board members and GISSO students in attendance.
 

May: Dr. Stacey Lyle gave a presentation on the "10 Highest Peaks in Texas" project, with the preliminary survey results, and with photos of the participants and of the points found and surveyed.

The local Trig*Star winners were issued their certificates and cash awards.

June: No meeting held.
 

July: Mike MacInnis gave a presentation on his trip to India and the survey work there. The proposed changes to the Chapter Constitution were reviewed, and the response was favorable.

August: As of the date of this report, the meeting is scheduled for 8/19/09. Nominations for officers will be held, with elections to be conducted by mail.
 

The results of the State Trig*Star contest are in, and once again our local Flour Bluff student, Anthony Padillano, was the 1st place winner. The national exam was proctored in July, but as of the date of this report, the results have not yet been announced.

CAPITAL AREA CHAPTER 13

 


PASO DEL NORTE

REMARKS: Chapter 17, had a regular business meeting on March 19th 2009, and meetings and guest speakers were discussed. Six attendees were present. May 21, 2009 Mr. Michael Parker (TSPS President) was our guest speaker. President Parker spoke about the bills that might affect Surveyors in the current legislative session. 13 attendees participated in this dinner meeting. The local Chapter would like to give special thanks to Craig Alderman for helping the local chapter for our guest speaker, and the New Mexico Professional Surveyors for there participation and attendance.
 

Chapter 17, had Mr. Davey Edwards as our guest speaker on July 23rd, Davey Edwards was informed on the issue of our particular situation in the Texas & Pacific Railroad Co Surveys reservation, from a local perspective. Davey was real informative about the view of the GLO, and was very receptive about our local concerns. Chapter 17, will is scheduling a business meeting on September 18th to discuss moneys to be given from the local chapter to the 58th Convention and Technology Exposition.

WEST CENTRAL TEXAS CHAPTER 18

Work is still under way and making progress in preparation for the 2010 TSPS Symposium to be held in Abilene. If anyone has thoughts or suggestions or would just like volunteer to help etc…   contact Maxey Sheppard, he will be glad to hear from you.

 

Our Continued Education Seminar to be held in Abilene on November 13th. Is shaping up nicely too. Gary Hudson is our contact person on that.  Speaker will be Milton Denny PLS, and it looks to be a really good seminar this year. Gary Hudson will be glad to visit with anyone interested, no doubt.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY CHAPTER 19

During the Third quarter of 2009 The Rio Grande Valley Chapter had the accomplishments:
 

June:

New Elections of Officers.  
 

July:

Coordination meeting, and discussed possible survey seminars in the Valley.   As such we requested pre-approval from Board of Registration for 8 hours of Continuing Education Credit for establishing Premise EDM baseline, per NGS specifications.
 

August:  Speaker, Ariel Chavez, PE, RPLS; Port of Brownsville Engineer/Surveyor

HEART OF TEXAS CHAPTER 21

Chapter 21 Regular Business Meeting

Caddo Street Grill

Cleburne, TX

August 1, 2009 @ 6PM

 

15 RPLS members and 18 non-RPLS members/guests for a total of 33.  No earthquakes were detected at the time of the meeting.  Garey Gilley gave a presentation informing the Chapter of matters regarding unsigned easement plats, FEMA flood certificates, monumentation, etc.  His presentation was very well received.  After the presentation, the regular business meeting was held.

Brown volunteered to look into such seminars and ask about CEU’s for Gilley’s presentation.  Much discussion was made regarding the newly elected positions and their roles on how to best serve the Chapter and the TSPS.

 

Other votes – To always pay for the speaker and guests meal and to always reimburse the treasurer for stamps on mail out invitations.

 

Set the next meeting in Stephenville on Saturday September 19, 2009 @ 6PM.  Location TBD.

NORTHEAST TEXAS CHAPTER 23

Chapter 23 meets bi-monthly. 
 

In June, Chapter met at Luigi’s Italian Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant.  No program was planned and the business meeting was centered on the seminar that was held in May, in Jefferson, Texas, and the up-coming fish fry to be sponsor by our Chapter at the Tyler Junior College Summer Camp in June.  Chapter 23 was represented by 7 Surveyors and SIT/Technicians and 1 Lady Friend for a total of 8.
 

No meeting was held for July.
 

A meeting is scheduled for August 11, there is no program planned for a t this time.
