SEMINAR & SYMPOSIUM
SUBCOMMITTEE SubCommittee Mandate: Prepare, schedule and organize subcommittee meetings. Prepare and submit committee reports to the Education Committee chair in time to be included in the quarterly board books. Plan and organize the TSPS seminar offerings for both CEU’s and paraprofessionals in accordance with the TSPS professional development curriculum categories. Plan and organize the symposium for this year and for the near future. Provide suggestions for future seminar offerings in coordination with the Course Development & Speaker Development Subcommittee. Work with TSPS staff members to work out logistics for the seminars and symposiums. Help seek local volunteers for both the seminars and symposium. Work with TSPS staff members to insure that any scheduled seminars are listed on the TSPS website. Coordinate with the On-line/Distance Learning Subcommittee to offer on-line courses.
The following topics are those that the sub-committee has been working on for for the coming year.
“Locating Original Corners” Seminar in Concan on Sept 11-12.
“GIS in a Business Environment” Seminar to be presented November 15 by Jack Avis, in Beaumont. This same seminar was successfully presented by Jack in the Valley in June.
“GNSS, Geodesy and Map Projections For Texas land Surveyors” Seminar to be presented by Jim Gillis in December, in Dallas
Symposium 2009 to be held in Waco March 20 and 21. We will be finishing the details on this event over the next few weeks.
We are also working on a seminar for Lubbock, that is not yet finalized, and we have not yet chosen a speaker for our all day seminar in Austin Dec 13.
At the last board meeting, the policy proposed by this sub-committe regarding remuneration for speakers was adopted, which has already made seminar planning much easier.

Jim Gillis, Chair
SKILLS USA Keep in mind the primary goal of the SkillsUSA program is to prepare students for life after graduation, be it university, post-secondary or workforce and any combination thereof. The contest is a spin-off thereof greatly assisting in the accomplishment of the primary goal by instilling completion in a safe and rewarding setting, following rules of decorum, leadership and good conduct.
The SkillsUSA Nationals held in Kansas City, Mo. was an awesome event. We received a lot support from the local surveyors. Griner and Schmitz, Survey Supply Co. (second oldest active survey supplier in the country) helped stuff prize packages for the students participating in the presentation and used as give-away prizes during same. Dooley and Pruitt graciously provided a local PLS and survey crew to certify the demonstration course. They showed the nation how to locate local control and set out a base line. The students were given instrumentation orientation concurrently on the streets of downtown Kansas City in the midst of a huge gathering of students, teachers and industry (and city passer-bys). The presentation to the SkillsUSA University explaining the benefits of incorporating Surveying and Mapping into the SkillsUSA program was well received and several states expressed interest. If we get more states involved next year Texas may get to actually demonstrate at Nationals as part of the contest instead of just a presentation to SkillsUSA advisors and administrators. This year politics and a basic lack of knowledge in the process from all angles restricted further participation at Nationals.
1. State what remains to meet your charge.
The sub-committee is in the process of post-contest review, evaluation, and updating the contest rules for the 2008-2009 year.
Develop a curriculum plan to assist teachers with preparation for next year’s contest
2. State your plan to meet the charge and the help you will need from the committee to meet the charge.
The plan is to have updated rules and a basic supporting curriculum outline at the gathering in San Antonio. TSPS approval will be gained prior to submission to SkillsUSA. Industry support and approval is vital and TSPS has been recognized as an organization with a lot of respect from SkillsUSA because of our involvement and influence in the program.
Tomorrow we will be heading to San Diego for the annual Survey Summit and the ESRI Users Conference. I will heavily promote surveying education at all levels and especially TSPS involvement with the FIRST organized surveying program in high school in the nation.
Respectfully submitted,
Wm. M. (Bill) Coleman, RPLS
TRIG*STAR
UNIVERSITY ADVISORY
We have completed the 2nd annual Teacher Retreat early in June and by all accounts it was a huge success. Thirty teachers attended the three day event and were treated to a program featuring many different aspects of the surveying profession. The program started off with a fish fry sponsored by Chapter 23 and after opening remarks by President Coleen Johnson a keynote address was presented by Mr. Brian Audio, RPLS from BP America. Also attending the Wednesday evening program were approximately 18 students of the Survey Camp. Mr. Audio’s presentation featured some of the dynamic aspects of the surveying profession.
Some of the highlights of the retreat were presentations by Darrel Shine and Nedra Foster on historical aspects of the profession, field exercises with hands on with surveying equipment, pacing exercises, applying geometrical principals to measure distances through obstructions and a real crowd favorite Geocaching with handheld GPS units that were given to the teachers. The teachers were also inspired by a presentation from Barton Burnett, another high school teacher, who attended the first Teacher Retreat and implemented the Skills USA surveying program at Duncanville High School.
General comments from the reviews from the teachers were very positive. Some said that this is the best seminar that they have ever attended. They also added that the food was awesome and I can testify to that myself.
The total expenses for the event were approximately $13,750. It is hard to have as exact amount because of local companies and individuals picking up some of the expenses of the event. We did have in excess of $9,000 of sponsorships so the event cost to TSPS was well short of our budget of $12,000. We also had approximately 30 individuals that participated in the retreat and totaling hundreds of man hours of which it would be very difficult to put a price tag. I want to thank all of the sponsors and all of the participants that made this a great retreat!
We now have had a total of 51 teachers who have attended the first two retreats. These teachers will have the potential to impact hundreds of other individuals, both other teachers and students over the course of the coming years. We have already seen an impact through Skills USA with some of the students entering surveying colleges this fall. As far as I know this is the only surveying Teacher Retreat anywhere in the United States so we are on the cutting edge of innovation. We need to keep the momentum going and put our support behind the future events and make each one better than the one before. It will require a lot of planning, numerous support cast and sponsorships but the potential rewards are unlimited.

Joey Stanger, Chairman
