CHAPTER ACTIVITIES I have
received correspondence from several chapters this quarter. They appear to be
busy in their chapters. We are
still working on a Chapter Presidents Handbook that hopefully will be ready to
use at the October meeting. The rough draft will be presented and worked on at
the Chapter Presidents forum. I am still looking for information from each
committee to be placed in the Handbook. The information should contain the
committee’s primary duty and if you have a need for additional members. Please
remember that this is going to incoming Chapter presidents that may have little
or no knowledge of TSPS or its committees. This can be used as a great tool to
recruit these members into your committee. Other
topics that may be of interest to the chapters are always welcome. Respectfully Submitted, Curtis Strong
GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS The Governmental Affairs Committee has been working on the proposed legislative agenda as reported at prior board meetings and will meet at the August 2008 Strategic Planning Session.
A verbal report of the committee proceedings can be provided at the Board Meeting, if requested.
Respectfully Submitted Patrick A. Smith, RPLS
PUBLIC
RELATIONS The committee has not met since the February board meeting and no activity has taken place. However, on July 22, Chris Freeman and John Pierce attended the Creative Kids summer workshop at the South Garland Branch Library in Garland, Texas. They taught surveying to children and gave them a first hand look at what surveyors do everyday. The children were given the opportunity to get hands on experience with some of the field equipment as they located points and went through pacing exercises. This type of outreach by volunteer members of TSPS provides wonderful opportunities to educate the public about surveying and plants a seed for our future. Many thanks to Chris and John for their dedication and hard work.
Respectfully submitted,
Richard L. Worthey Chairman

Other Reports PRESIDENTIAL REPORT
Since the last board meeting, I have been quite busy with TSPS business and travels, my home life and my work. At the end of May, David McDow, Curtis Strong, Angela Strong and myself had the opportunity to meet with the surveyors in the Kerrville area (Chapter 15, which has been nonexistent for quite some time now) to begin discussions on revamping that Chapter. I’m happy to report that at least one of those in attendance recently joined TSPS. I have personally called him to thank him for joining and offered our assistance in anything that we can do to help him or his Chapter.
In June, I attended the kickoff of the Teachers Retreat in Tyler. I was thrilled to visit with parents, students and teachers in attendance. It is refreshing to see these programs generate such positive energy and enthusiasm for the surveying profession. This program is a “must do” for the near future and I hope to see it grow even more. We will be hearing a presentation later on in this meeting and will have the opportunity to vote on the host location for next year’s retreat. I would like to take this time to recognize Joey Stanger and the committee members and volunteers for their hard work putting on the last two retreats.
The first of next week I will have the opportunity to speak to another group of teachers at the Texas Capitol Visitors Center for a Teachers Workshop. In May, this board approved a motion to help sponsor the workshop with a financial contribution of $870. In addition, each teacher will receive a packet that includes both of the TSPS career videos, the brochure and poster as well as a few other small freebies. Yet another great opportunity to get out in front of the general public and help educate them on TSPS and what the surveying profession is all about.
The end of next week, I will be attending the golf tournament and GIS seminar sponsored by the TSPS Permian Basin Chapter and the New Mexico Professional Surveyors Llano Estacado Chapter in Ruidoso, NM.
In two short months my year as President will come to a close as Michael Parker takes the helm after we set sail on our first ever annual meeting not on Texas soil. I am getting excited about the convention and hope that most of you are as well. We have top notch speakers lined up for the seminars and it promises to be a fun convention for all who attend. All aboard that’s coming aboard!
Respectfully Submitted by:
Coleen M. Johnson, President TSPS
